Jan Pitt
Born in 1946, Jan was encouraged from an early age to express herself in paint and so began a passion for creating pictures of mainly imaginative expression. During the seventies and eighties she experimented with a number of mediums but principally worked in oils, which she still enjoys. In the 1970’s she moved to Bath and after some time at the Royal West of England Academy set up her studio to continue working. In the 1997 she went to New Zealand for three months and was amazed at the purity of light and brightness of colour. This experience inspired her to develop an interest in soft pastel, as the medium is an ideal vehicle for many of her subjects to be seen in this new light.
Jan's pastel work has featured in a National Art magazine, and she has run workshops and participated in eight successful exhibitions in Wimbledon Village, Norton St. Philip and Bath.
Her subject matter ranges widely including still life, surreal landscapes and the totally abstract. It comes from a lifetime of stored images, some recent and others from her dreams and imagination of childhood, making the work fresh and sometimes deceptively naive. She rarely paints literally, as colour, shape and composition are more important to her than perspective.
